I very much enjoyed my four day stay at the charming and delightful Highland Garden House B&B (which I chose from a list of recommended accommodations provided by Dakota Art for their workshop participants). All the rooms in this lovingly restored house are immaculate. The established neighbourhood is quiet, safe and close to downtown. Breakfasts are delicious and are prepared using the highest quality ingredients. The host is gracious, helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Spanky the cat is absolutely fantastic. I highly recommend Highland Garden House B&B.

This was our first Air BnB experience and it was PERFECT. Dennis was welcoming and generous. Do not miss his breakfast. He loves to cook, even makes his own granola, which is excellent. He’ll also whip you up a perfect omelet. There’s also an excellent cat, Spanky, who will happily sleep in your room if you let him. Dennis also provided us with maps and directions to several great places to see wildlife and wetlands. We had much to talk about and would have stayed a week if we could. For years we’ve just passed through Mt. Vernon. Now we see it’s a great base camp for all of the Skagit Valley and the Mt Baker region. Thanks Dennis! John and Stella.

    “Like staying with a friend”

This is probably the least formal Bed and Breakfast I’ve been to, and in many ways the most comfortable. It was like staying with a friend, because by the end of breakfast I indeed felt like I’d made friends with host, Dennis George.

There are only two rooms available on the second story of this older home on the hill in Mount Vernon. One is a single, and we stayed in the double. (It does have a large closet type room, that could be used for one more bed, if needed). Both guest rooms share the bath with the host, and it was not a problem.

We arrived early, since I had a function to attend early in the evening. Dennis spotted us arriving, and told us to use the back door. He gave us a key, and a quick tour of the home. We dropped off our stuff and headed on our way. Arriving back later was no problem; we let ourselves in and went upstairs to bed.

I had told Dennis that we were vegans, and that was absolutely no problem for him. It turns out, that much of what he bakes he does without dairy, and with very little oil. We enjoyed his homemade granola (with our own almond milk, which he urged us to bring with us), as well as a cookie, yummy granola bar (his own recipe), homemade bread (with jam) along with grapefruit and fresh French roast coffee. He sat down and chatted with us, and by the end of the conversation we discovered we shared many things in common, including a love of Orcas Island, hiking, baking, cooking and cycling.

Although we don’t live very far from this B&B, it turned out to be a perfect resting place before heading into the Cascade Mountains (near Mount Baker) to go hiking. We would definitely stay here again.
