From the homemade granola and peasant bread to the comfortably firm bed in my guest room to Dennis’s multi-layered knowledge of the area and local history, my experiences at Highland Garden House proved it an excellent home-away-from-home for the three days I was in Mt Vernon researching family history. Dennis is a quietly attentive host of many talents which he skillfully combines to serve the needs of his guests. Highly recommended.

Awesome breakfast, perfect host, charming cat, lovely gardens, walk to the river and downtown Mt Vernon

We spent the week in Mt. Vernon for the Tulip Festival. HGH made an ideal location for base of operations for seeing Skagit Valley and a day trip to Vancouver. Customer service is excellent; Dennis even had two bottles of water waiting for us in the room and bathroom totes for each of us. Talk about a good host! Dennis knows every good hiking, kayaking, and scenic spot around. I enjoy hearing about the house, seeing the improvements Dennis made (great job!), and the history of the house / town. Dennis has maps and guide books on hand to show us which roads to take; and, he added points of interest (picturesque roads with overlooks, oysters). We liked the South Room, but it did get hotter then we expected the first day; we took Dennis’ advise and kept the drapes closed the rest of the week. There is an extra outlet / extension cord in the room, but it is by the table and chair, which still works. My preference is to charge a cell phone or hook up a computer on both sides of the bed. There was room for my CPAP on my side of the bed, which was great! The hall bath was stocked with all sorts of bathroom necessities, in case we forgot anything – very thoughtful. Wasn’t expecting to share a bathroom with our host, too; but it was kept so clean it was not an issue. I loved breakfast and the homemade granola bars, and the breakfast cookies are melt in your mouth / angels dancing on the tip of your tongue marvelous. My husband had two every morning, and he is not a sweets person. The website pictures of breakfast really don’t do Dennis’ talents justice. Loved the eggs to order: I like medium over easy and he has the perfect flip down pat! The resident indoor / outdoor cat, Spanky, loves people and food in equal proportion. Enter at Spanky’s door by the back deck. He has his own cat bed where he is the guardian.
