Then and Now: Corner of 4th and Highland, Mt. Vernon

4thAndHighland 4thAndHighland_2014The corner of 4th and Highland is just two blocks down the hill from Highland Garden House.  Fourth runs from the viaduct to Fir, then becomes Riverside Drive.  To the south it becomes 2nd Street.  This is all ‘Old 99’ to me.

When we first moved to Mount Vernon in 1957 we lived at 203 Cedar Street in a rental house and used to walk up 4th to the old Dale’s B and H Market for candy.  This is the building that is now the G and M Market on the opposite corner, to the north, of these two photos.

If you visit this place and look closely you can still see where the gas pump island stood in the ‘Then’ photo.  Thanks to Skagit County History Facebook page for the ‘Then’ Photo.  The ‘Now’ photo is from the Skagit County Assessors Office.  The ‘Then’ photo is captioned: ‘From the 1920s or 1930s.’
