Mount Vernon – General

Mount Vernon is situated pretty much in the middle of some pretty awesome country. It is only a 20 minute drive to the salt water; in an hour and a half you can be at the Mt. Baker Ski Area; Vancouver, BC Canada is 80 miles to the north via I-5 and Seattle, WA USA is 60 miles to the south. The San Juan Islands sit to the west about 25 miles. And, a free boat launch with free parking on the Skagit River is within the Mount Vernon city limits, 5 minutes from HGH B and B!

Skagit County LogoAll this from a little town in mostly rural Skagit County. Skagit (pronounced like ‘gadget’) includes some of the eastern-most San Juan Islands and stretches to the crest of the North Cascade Mount Range about 95 miles further east. The lowest point in Skagit County is, of course, sea level and the highest is Mount Buckner at 9114 ft. As you see from the County logo, birds and tulips are a big thing! Blue heron, snow geese and bald eagle. The story goes that the picture of the bald eagle had to be edited a bit to make him/her look a little less menancing than they normally look! Something to do with the eyebrows, I think.
